CCSD Nurses earn prestigious national certification
Congratulations to the following Cherry Creek Schools nurses, who recently earned National Certification in School Nursing (NCSN):
•    Sherry Hodges – Outback Preschool/Child Find
•    Debbie Pond – Cottonwood Creek Elementary
•    Patti Rojec – Campus Middle School

To qualify for the National Certification in School Nursing (NCSN), an experienced school nurse must complete a demanding course of independent study and pass a rigorous national exam.  The exam requires the nurse to have accumulated a comprehensive body of knowledge and be able to apply principles of medical management to protect and improve the health of their school community.  Answers to the many test-case scenarios ensure the NCSN nurse is distinguished in the following areas:
•    Provision of mandated health services in the school setting
•    Development of healthcare, IEP and 504 accommodation plans
•    Detection, treatment and prevention of episodic health conditions
•    Management of chronic health conditions to improve the future health of students
•    Incorporation of developmentally appropriate health promotion and self-management into clinic interactions
•    Containment of the spread of disease
•    Management and prevention of injuries
•    Protection against environmental hazards
•    Provision for the emotional and physical safety of the school community for anticipated and unanticipated crises
•    Collaboration with community stakeholders to identify resources and outreach programs

Marnie McKercher, Health Services Coordinator for Cherry Creek Schools, commended the nurses’ commitment to excellence.  “It is reassuring to know that our students and staff are in such capable hands!” said McKercher.
