Twenty-nine students from the Cherry Creek School District were honored as winners of the Saluting America’s Tribute Contest during a celebration on December 7 at the History Colorado Center. The students submitted essays or artwork honoring our nation’s heroes – veterans and active duty military members – as part of Veterans Week 2013 in the Cherry Creek School District.
• John Wideman, Belleview Elementary, K-2nd Grade winner
• Mr. Dan Cuoco’s class, Antelope Ridge Elementary, 3rd-5th Grade winner
• Gabriella Ello, Fox Ridge Middle School, Middle School winner
• Grace Heirerling, Cherokee Trail High School, High School winner
The students were honored by the American Legion and the Saluting America program, which educates and instills a strong sense of patriotism in America’s youth, raises awareness of America’s cherished values and honors the sacrifices made by our nation’s active military and veterans. During the Tribute Contest celebration, students got to meet two Medal of Honor recipients; Donald E. Ballard and Salvatore A. Giunta.
“It’s your responsibility to keep America great,” Giunta said to the students, who then received their awards and posed for pictures with the Medal of Honor recipients.
In addition to participating in the Saluting America Tribute Contest, students at every school in the Cherry Creek School District took part in Veterans Week celebrations and events to mark Veterans Day and honor those who have, and continue, to serve and sacrifice. For more information, click here
