Horizon celebrates 30 years of educational excellence
Horizon Community Middle School celebrated three decades of educational excellence during its 30th Anniversary Celebration on April 11. Past and present students and staff members, along with their family and friends, filled the school’s gym for a program filled with memories and milestones.

The audience was amazed as student presenters shared facts from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. (Was a first class stamp really only 20 cents and a gallon of gas only $1.30 in 1982 when Horizon opened?) The school’s first principal, Dr. Joan Grady, talked about what it was like to build, furnish, and staff a school from the ground up. Four more of the school’s seven principals followed her at the podium to share their memories; Dr. Kathy Smith, Dr. Andre Lanier, Dr. Tony Davis and current principal Dr. Jeanette Patterson. Past principals Dr. Fred Henderson and Ms. Gwen Sonnenburg weren’t able to attend.

Along with the memories, the crowd enjoyed music, through the performances of the Horizon Jazz Band, Seventh Grade Orchestra and Eighth Grade Choir, which sang, appropriately, “Celebration” while wearing colorful outfits straight out of the 1980s.

But what was most apparent throughout the evening was the pride that the Horizon community feels in its middle school, and the positive impact the school has had on thirty years’ of students, parents, teachers, administrators, neighbors and other community members.
