Timberline Elementary had another successful year participating in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL). Timberline's FLL teams, the Pomaikai Landmines and the Tornado Bots, competed in qualifying tournaments on Nov. 14 at Campus Middle school and Nov. 21 at Aurora Lotus School.
The Pomaikai Landmines achieved the 6th highest robot score for their division at the tournament and earned the opportunity to represent Timberline at the Colorado FLL State Championship on January 16, 2016 at Dakota Ridge High School in Littleton.
FLL’s scientific research theme this season was Trash Trek, to make less trash or improve the way people handle the trash we make. The Pomaikai Landmines tackled the problem of properly disposing of used motor oil and developed a recycling awareness sticker that can be put on bottles of motor oil and must be torn before the bottle can be opened. The Tornado Bots wanted to find a more efficient way of handling compost. They made a spiral aerator and funnel cloud watering drip system to improve the compost barrel efficiency.
Both teams packed in a lot of learning this season, including talking with and presenting to professionals. In addition to expanding their knowledge of science and technology, the students put FLL’s Core Values into action and learned about teamwork, respect and people skills, all while having a ton of fun.
